815 Campbell-Swift House, Federal, ca 1826
This house was built by Christopher Campbell
and sold shortly after to General Joseph Gardner Swift, the first graduate of
the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. General Swift lived in this house after
retiring from an illustrious career that include the superintendency of West
Point, the chief engineer of the Army, and the surveyorship of the Port of New
York.
The Swift family owned the home until 1916. The
original house was only one room deep without a vestibule. The delicate tracery
over the door and the fine entablature with dentils under the eaves define this
as Federal style. |
